The English Setter dog was originally bred to find and point game when hunting before shotguns were used to kill birds in the open country. The dogs were trained to crouch whenever they pointed game. 'Setters' as these dogs were called, were the foundation of today's English Setter.
The English Setter breed ancestors came from the Large Water Spaniel, Springer Spaniel, and the Spanish Pointer. This breed has been developed along two types: one for show dog and the other for field dog. The show dog type is usually larger and heavier.
English Setters are relax, calm, and well mannered dogs, so they are suitable for house pets. Originally, they were bred to hunt and cover miles upon miles of ground distance, therefore, physical exercise such as running is a favorite for the English Setter. This is one dog that cannot be kept indoors without exercise for too long at a time.
English Setter dogs are very intelligent and can be trained to perform about any task another breed can do, with the exception of herding. However, in certain occasion problem might arise due to their natural bird instinct that often distract them in outdoor environments. Sometimes they would be unwilling to repeat a behavior out of fear to disappoint the trainer. Positive reinforcement training methods therefore work best for English Setters.
Lots of exercise every day is a requirement, at least one good hour of fast-paced running. Due to its long coat, the English Setter's fur may prove to be difficult to keep clean and shiny. It needs regular brushing every two to three days, minimum. English Setter dog is best matched with owner who lives in rural or suburban environment. The lifespan of the English Setter can last up to 12 years.
