Beagles are one of the most popular dog breed in the United States because of their size, and also for their outgoing and friendly personality. Beagle dogs have existed for centuries, and descend from several breeds, including the Talbot Hound, Southern Hound, North Country Beagle and possibly Harrier. They are scent hound, and were initially developed to hunt hare, rabbit, or other game. They have a keen sense of smell and tracking instinct, and they are good as detection dogs mostly employed in the airport.
Beagles are intelligent, but they are easily distracted by smells around them as a result of being bred for the long chase. They are generally obedient but can be difficult to recall once they have picked up a scent and determined to follow it, which can make them hard to train.
Beagle dogs are very social and love human companionship. You will find that this dog breed is an excellent house pet who remains gentle and calm, especially around its family members. They are a good choice for families with children. They do well living in the city or in the country.
Itís recommended to keep your beagle in a fenced area. Be sure not to take this dog out off leash if he has been boarded up in the house for a long time. If he catches the sense of a small animal through a trail, he is liable to dash off and run around for a long period of time, especially if his energy reserves are built up from non-activity. Most Beagles have a long lifespan of between 10 and 15 years.
