The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a large and powerful breed that is descended from Mastiffs and Sighthounds. They originally came from Turkey, and overtime some variations began to develop.

The dogs were known as coban kopegi, i.e. "shepherd dog", because they were used to guard livestocks and also as companion. In the 1970s, western breeders became interested in the dogs and began to develop standards.

The Anatolian shepherd dogs are strong, independent, highly protective, watchful and territorial, they need to be socialized early to adapt to their environment. They are intelligent and can learn quickly but might choose not to obey. It requires an experienced dog owner who is consistent and firm in training and socialization. This is not generally a dog for a begining owner.
